In 1875 Joseph Bulova, a 23-year-old immigrant of Bohemia, opened a jewelry store on Maiden Lane in New York City. His modest business evolved into one of today's largest watch companies. In 1911 Bulova began manufacturing fine pocket watches, which sold in massive numbers. During World War I, wristwatches were used in the military for their convenience. Returning veterans brought home the fashion, and a great new market emerged. Bulova had sufficient production facilities and a mastery of jewelry design and introduced the first line of men's wristwatches in 1919, followed by the first full line of ladies' wristwatches and diamond wristwatches. Two years later, Bulova introduced the world's first clock radio.
